A search result says “Seedance GitHub.” The repository uses a familiar logo and offers a one-line install command. That does not prove the model weights are public, the code is official, or the download is safe.

Search results around popular AI models often mix five different things: an official hosted API, a third-party API, a web interface, community code, and unrelated projects using the same name. Treating them as interchangeable can expose an API key, upload private assets to an unknown service, or leave a production workflow tied to an unsupported endpoint.

As of September 12, 2026, ByteDance’s public Seedance pages describe a hosted model family. The official Seedance 2.5 announcement says API access is coming through BytePlus ModelArk. The public catalog does not present Seedance model weights as an open-source download. Verify the current official documentation before making a purchase or integration because rollout status can change.

Five meanings of Seedance API

An official hosted API is operated or documented by the model owner or its named cloud platform. It has an official model identifier, authentication method, billing terms, rate limits, and data policy.

A third-party aggregator buys or brokers access and exposes its own endpoint. It may be legitimate and convenient, but its price, queue, retention policy, and model version are separate from the official service.

A frontend wrapper gives users a form and calls another provider behind the scenes. It may never expose an API to you. “Powered by Seedance” is a product statement, not developer documentation.

Web automation controls buttons in a consumer interface. This is fragile, may violate service terms, and is not equivalent to a supported API.

Reverse-engineered access copies private requests or session tokens. It can stop without warning and creates serious security and account risks. Do not build a business workflow around it.

How to verify an official Seedance API

Begin with a first-party ByteDance Seed or BytePlus page, not a search snippet. Follow the documentation link from that domain. Then check seven items:

  1. The exact model ID appears in official documentation.
  2. The authentication host belongs to the documented service.
  3. The company named on the invoice matches the service you intend to buy.
  4. Pricing states the billable unit and treatment of failed jobs.
  5. Rate-limit and error documentation exists.
  6. Data retention, training use, and deletion terms are available.
  7. A status page or support route identifies operational incidents.

Logos, copied documentation, and a package name containing “official” are weak evidence. A verified organization account helps, but the safest path still begins from the owner’s website and follows its links outward.

Seedance API access and pricing

Do not compare APIs until you know what each price buys. Video services may bill by generated second, resolution, model tier, or a platform credit whose real value changes by setting. Some charge for rejected or failed generations. Others reserve faster queues for a higher plan.

Create a dated comparison with these fields:

FieldWhy it matters
Provider and model IDConfirms what is actually being called
Input types and limitsDetermines whether references fit the job
Output duration and resolutionChanges both usefulness and cost
Billable unitMakes providers comparable
Failed-job policyPrevents hidden iteration cost
Queue and rate limitsAffects production time
Data retention and regionMatters for faces and client assets
Commercial termsDetermines permitted use

Calculate cost per usable second. If five ten-second calls cost the same amount but only one output passes review, the usable cost includes all five calls. Add any upscale, storage, download, and editing cost. This number will rarely match a provider’s headline price.

Avoid publishing a permanent price in a general guide. Link to the current official pricing page, show the date checked, and explain the billing unit so readers can update the math.

Is Seedance open source

“Open” can describe several very different artifacts. A research paper may explain architecture or evaluation without releasing weights. A public benchmark may show results without providing code. A GitHub repository may contain an API client, prompt examples, or a user interface. A Hugging Face page may be a demo that calls a remote service.

A model is not meaningfully available for local inference unless you can obtain the model weights under a license that permits your intended use. Training code, inference code, and weights are separate pieces. Check all three rather than trusting an “open source” tag in a blog post.

ByteDance’s model catalog explicitly labels some releases as open source. The public Seedance pages cited here do not make that claim for the Seedance weights. Until first-party documentation says otherwise, describe Seedance as a hosted model rather than an open-source local model.

Can you run Seedance locally

Powerful hardware does not solve missing weights or licensing. If official Seedance weights are not available, a “local Seedance install” is probably a client for a remote API, a wrapper around a website, or a different open video model presented under a confusing label.

A local workflow may still be possible with a genuinely open video model whose weights and license are published. That can improve privacy and control, but it is not Seedance. Name the alternative model accurately and compare its hardware needs, license, output quality, and maintenance burden.

For occasional clips, a reputable hosted interface is usually simpler. For repeatable application integration, wait for a documented API or use a clearly identified provider with acceptable terms.

Evaluate GitHub and Hugging Face pages

Check the owner first. Is the repository linked from an official domain? Is the organization verified? Look at commit history, maintainers, releases, issue responses, and whether the project appeared yesterday with copied branding.

Read the model card and license. Confirm whether large weight files exist or whether the code sends prompts to a remote endpoint. Search install scripts for unexpected downloads, telemetry, shell commands, and requests for administrator privileges. Never put a production key in a sample notebook you have not read.

On Hugging Face, distinguish a model repository from a Space. A model repository can still omit usable weights. A Space is an application and may call another service. Read the files and runtime description. Check who receives uploaded images and how long they are retained.

Community forks can be useful, but they add another trust layer. A popular fork is not an official release. Pin versions, review dependencies, and test in an isolated environment before connecting files or credentials.

Protect your data and API keys

Never paste an API key into an unknown web form, browser extension, shared notebook, or public issue. Use a secret manager or environment variable. Create the narrowest key the provider permits, set spending limits and alerts, and rotate the key immediately if it appears in a screenshot, log, or repository.

Read whether uploaded faces, voices, products, and client files are stored or used for training. Check deletion controls and processing region. Get permission before uploading a person’s likeness or material you do not own. An API makes automation easier; it does not transfer rights to the input or output.

The best route for nondevelopers

If you need a handful of clips, use a reputable web interface. You avoid authentication code, retries, storage, and billing integration. Record the provider, model version, settings, and export terms so the work remains reproducible. An API becomes useful when generation is part of a repeated product workflow, not simply because an endpoint exists.

If a team later moves from the browser to an API, repeat the same prompt and source asset in both routes. Compare output, available controls, moderation, time, and cost. Matching model names do not guarantee matching defaults. Keep the browser workflow available until the automated route produces repeatable exports and handles failed jobs safely.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a Seedance API key

Start from official ByteDance Seed or BytePlus documentation and follow the current onboarding instructions. Do not buy a key from an unrelated site. Third-party providers issue their own keys under their own terms.

Is Seedance open source

The public Seedance pages reviewed for this guide do not describe the model weights as open source. Recheck the official catalog for a later release.

Can I install Seedance locally

A true local install requires released weights, inference code, and a suitable license. Code that calls a remote service is not local inference.

Is there an official Seedance GitHub repository

Only treat a repository as official when it is linked by ByteDance or BytePlus documentation or belongs to a verified organization they identify.

Can I use Seedance in ComfyUI

A custom node may call a hosted API, but that does not mean Seedance runs on your computer. Inspect the node, endpoint, key handling, and license before installation.

Seedances.co offers an independent third-party web interface for AI video generation. It is not ByteDance’s official Seedance site. Confirm the current model, provider terms, and export conditions before uploading sensitive material. For a first test, use a disposable prompt with no client assets, record the visible model label, and download the result before purchasing a larger credit package.
